What’s The Lomo Effect in Photography?

What’s the lomo effect? It is the high contrast, grainy and swirly photo effect that often produce an artsy, vintage or retro feel. Add to that a vignetting effect (darkening at the edges) and the shot is framed, completing an old photograph effect that captures the moment in a very unique way.

Soft-focus, color splashes, unpredictability and a raw feel seems to add to the appeal of the lomo effect, often captured through LOMO cameras or otherwise done through modern photo editing computer techniques. One could easily use Photoshop or GIMP to achieve the same effect.

While other people would hate its twisted and highly saturated colors and consider such as defects, followers of lomography would celebrate it. Even though the image may even appear to be blurred or distorted, there is a compensating effect through the overall mood produced in the photograph. After all, to many people, a photo is not a mere mirror or exact replica of the outside images, but also a reflection of the inner feeling evoked by the actual moment of the shot.
